Money Changers in Bali: A Practical Cash Checklist

Check a Bali money changer’s licence, compare the final IDR amount, count your cash and keep the receipt. Includes an example calculation and checklist.

The short answer

Choose a currently licensed money changer, agree the rate and fees before handing over money, and count the full rupiah amount yourself at the counter. A large advertised rate alone does not establish the final amount or that the business is authorised.

In this guide

Check the actual business, not just the sign

Bank Indonesia publishes licensing information that includes non-bank money changer operators and their status. Use the official register to check the business you intend to use. A familiar-looking sign or a recommendation from somebody outside the shop is not a substitute for identifying the actual provider.

Check the business name and the relevant location, and ask the counter staff if the details are unclear. If you cannot establish who is making the transaction or understand the terms, choose another provider. This guide does not maintain a “best rate today” list because rates and business status can change.

Plan a convenient stop near the area you are visiting. Crossing Bali to chase a small headline difference can use more of your holiday than the exchange is worth. Ask Simson to help fit a stop into the route, while keeping the choice and transaction under your control.

Compare the amount you receive, not only the headline

Before handing over cash, state the currency and amount you want to exchange. Ask which rate applies to that transaction, whether any fee or commission is deducted and the final total in IDR. If the advertised rate has conditions, clarify them first.

Make the calculation on your own phone. The following numbers are deliberately invented to demonstrate the method. They are not a current exchange rate, a quote or a recommendation about how much cash to carry.

Scroll the table sideways to compare.

Illustrative calculation only: not a live exchange quote
ItemExample
Money handed over100 AUD
Example rate10,000 IDR for each AUD
Before fees100 × 10,000 = 1,000,000 IDR
If a stated fee were 20,000 IDRFinal amount would be 980,000 IDR

Compare providers using that final amount for the same foreign-currency total. A fee-free headline can still produce less money than a different rate, and a high rate with deductions can produce less than it first appears. Ask for the terms before deciding.

Count once, carefully, before you leave

  1. Agree the foreign-currency amount and final rupiah total before the exchange.
  2. Keep the transaction visible and avoid juggling unrelated purchases at the same time.
  3. Count the rupiah notes yourself at the counter and check the denominations.
  4. If the money is taken back, rearranged or the amount changes, count the complete amount again.
  5. Keep the receipt and check that it matches the transaction you agreed.

Take your time. If you are being hurried, distracted or cannot follow the calculation, stop and ask for clarity before proceeding. You do not need to finish a transaction merely because you have spent a few minutes at a counter.

Keep other cash and valuables separate from the notes involved in the exchange. When travelling as a family, having one adult handle the transaction while another watches the children can make it easier to concentrate.

Cash, ATMs and cards solve different needs

Ask the places you intend to pay what they accept. A cash exchange, an ATM withdrawal and a card payment are different transactions with different provider terms. Check your bank’s fees, limits and exchange arrangements directly rather than treating an online reference rate as a promise about your account.

Bank Indonesia describes QRIS as its standard for QR payments, with cross-border use through participating payment applications. That does not mean every overseas banking app works at every QRIS counter. Confirm compatibility with your own provider and keep an alternative payment method for the things you have already booked.

There is no universal cash budget for every holiday. The useful list is your own: transport payment terms, cash-only purchases you expect to make, small incidentals and what your accommodation or activities accept. Avoid changing a large amount just because somebody else’s itinerary used that figure.

What help from a driver does and does not mean

Simson can help you plan a practical stop near your route. You choose the money changer, confirm its status and check the transaction. Transport assistance is not a guarantee of a particular exchange rate or protection against a dispute.

Never share a bank PIN or one-time security code with someone helping you. Enter account details only through your own trusted banking service. If there is a problem, keep the receipt and contact the provider or your bank through their official channels. Do not send card details to an unfamiliar person offering to reverse a transaction.

Use the first-visit checklist to plan the arrival without making a currency stop the first compulsory activity after a long flight. For a shopping outing, keep the purchase budget separate from the car quote and remember that you pay the shops directly.

A short checklist to save before heading out

  • I know the provider’s actual business name and checked the official licensing information.
  • I understand the rate, any deductions and the final IDR total.
  • I can check the arithmetic myself.
  • I have time to count every note before leaving.
  • I will keep the transaction receipt.
  • I have not shared a PIN, password or one-time code.

Those checks are more useful than a static list claiming to know the island’s best rate. The aim is a clear transaction with a provider you can identify, leaving you free to get on with the rest of the day.
